NYC Food Pantries See Record Number of Visits

New York City's food pantries, community-based organizations that provide free food to individuals and families in need, are experiencing unprecedented demand, with average monthly visits in 2024 up 82% compared to 2019.

This surge translates to an additional one million visits per month, surpassing even the peak levels seen during Covid.

The escalating cost of living, including rising expenses for food, childcare, and housing, is a significant factor driving this increased need for food assistance.

City Harvest plans to rescue over 81 million pounds of nutritious food this year to support local soup kitchens and food pantries.

Additionally, initiatives like the City Harvest Produce Pals program aim to provide free, fresh fruits and vegetables to students and their families at select New York City schools, starting this fall.

These efforts are crucial as the city confronts its highest recorded levels of food insecurity, highlighting the need for continued community support and expanded access to assistance programs.
