Early Days

In 1996, Magnolia Bakery opened its doors on a quaint corner in the heart of the West Village at 401 Bleecker Street.

Founded by Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey, the bakery was born from a shared love for baking and a vision of offering traditional American desserts with a homemade touch.

This simple idea resonated with locals, who quickly embraced the bakery’s nostalgic charm and cases filled with sweet, classic confections.

Jennifer and Allysa envisioned a place that felt comforting, welcoming, and uniquely New York.

At a time when the city’s food scene was growing increasingly eclectic, Magnolia Bakery’s humble beginnings offered a refreshing simplicity.

The focus was on perfecting timeless American desserts like cupcakes, cheesecakes, and icebox cakes, drawing a loyal following that appreciated their authenticity and warmth.

Rise to Fame

Magnolia Bakery's path to fame took a defining turn in 2001 with a brief, serendipitous appearance in Sex and the City.

In Season 3, Episode 5, Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda Hobbes are seen savoring vanilla cupcakes with pink buttercream frosting on a bench outside the bakery.

This now-iconic scene introduced the world to Magnolia and the “Carrie Cupcake,” sparking international interest and making Magnolia Bakery a must-visit spot for fans and tourists alike.

That TV moment didn’t just put Magnolia on the map—it ignited a cupcake craze. Soon, cupcakes were trendy across NYC, inspiring countless bakeries to join the movement.

Magnolia thrived under the guidance of Bobbie Lloyd, who joined as CEO and Chief Baking Officer in 2007, leading the bakery’s expansion across NYC and into new markets both nationally and globally.

Through it all, they remained dedicated to sharing their most famous treats, from their legendary banana pudding to cupcakes, even shipping them worldwide.

In 2020, Bobbie Lloyd released The Magnolia Bakery Handbook: A Complete Guide for the Home Baker, offering home bakers access to Magnolia’s recipes and encouraging fans to recreate the bakery’s iconic desserts.

Collaborations, like a partnership with Hamilton Beach to launch the Magnolia Bakery Hand Mixer, have made it easier than ever to bring a taste of Magnolia into kitchens everywhere.

What Makes It Famous

Today, Magnolia Bakery’s signature banana pudding—a creamy, dreamy dessert with layers of vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and velvety pudding—stands as a global sensation.

This beloved treat, available in five varieties, has cemented its place in dessert lore. Alongside it, the “Carrie Cupcake” with its pink buttercream remains a favorite, tying the bakery’s legacy to NYC’s pop culture history.

Beyond its desserts, Magnolia Bakery’s flagship West Village location is known for its cozy, vintage-inspired atmosphere.

With glass cases brimming with freshly baked goods and decor that recalls a bygone era, the original Bleecker Street bakery offers an inviting charm that makes each visit memorable.

Monthly featured flavors and rotating seasonal desserts keep regulars engaged, adding a sense of excitement to every trip.

Magnolia’s influence extends beyond individual desserts.

It played a significant role in popularizing cupcakes, sparking a wave of nostalgia-driven bakeries across New York City.

By championing traditional American treats with a modern twist, Magnolia helped shape NYC’s dessert culture, pioneering the early 2000s cupcake boom that continues to inspire today’s dessert trends.
