Future Uncertainty for Governors Island's Oyster Bar

The future of Island Oyster, a popular seasonal waterfront bar and eatery on Governors Island, is currently uncertain.

The Trust for Governors Island has issued a Request for Proposals for a 32,000-square-foot space near the ferry terminal, aiming to establish a new "social hub" and dining destination.

The selected operator is expected to offer creative food and beverage options, cater to a diverse range of visitors, and provide amenities such as live music and group-friendly activities.

Sustainability and environmentally responsible practices are also key criteria for prospective vendors. Island Oyster, which has been serving patrons since 2017 and is known for its panoramic views of New York Harbor and downtown Manhattan, has until May 2 to submit a proposal to retain its spot.

The current lease expires on October 31, 2025, with the new operator slated to commence operations by 2026.

This development reflects the Trust's ongoing efforts to enhance Governors Island as a year-round destination.

Planet Hollywood Reopens in NYC with a Modern Twist

After a pandemic-induced closure, Planet Hollywood has made a grand return to New York City, reopening at 136 West 42nd Street following a $17 million renovation.

Departing from its traditional display of movie memorabilia, the revamped venue now immerses guests in a dynamic visual experience with high-definition screens adorning the walls and ceilings.

These screens showcase a rotating array of movie scenes, music videos, and even live footage of diners, creating an ever-changing atmosphere.

Founder and CEO Robert Earl emphasized the shift in focus, stating that the new design aims to appeal not only to tourists but also to local Manhattanites.

The restaurant spans 17,500 square feet across two floors, each accommodating up to 175 guests. Notably, the building also houses Guy Fieri's fast-casual eatery, Chicken Guy!, on the first floor, highlighting a collaborative effort between Earl and Fieri.

The menu offers a range of dishes, from prime rib sliders priced at $22 to a $56 New York strip steak.

A standout item is the Wagyu deluxe burger, crafted with Pat LaFrieda meat, available for $28.
